ABB MS116 manual motor starters combine manual motor switching with thermal overload and magnetic short-circuit protection. They are used in motor feeder circuits, either for manual operation or as part of a coordinated starter with a contactor.

The page retains 15 MS116 model-and-order-code records. ABB describes the MS116 range with a 45 mm width; current-setting ranges and short-circuit performance vary by product and operating voltage. See the Motor Protection & Manual Motor Starters category.

MS116 Motor Protection & Selection

Protection Functions & Product Range

  • Adjustable thermal current setting for matching the motor’s rated operating current.
  • Magnetic short-circuit protection and manual ON/OFF operation, with a disconnection function.
  • Different setting ranges within the MS116 family; an individual unit does not cover the entire range.
  • Accessories and contactor combinations require the applicable ABB selection and coordination data.

Current Setting & Motor Selection

Use the motor nameplate current at the actual supply voltage and connection arrangement to choose an MS116 whose documented adjustment range covers that current. Set it according to the motor and installation instructions. Motor kW alone is insufficient because voltage, efficiency and operating conditions affect current.

Check starting duration, load duty and the specified overload trip characteristics. An excessive trip setting is not a substitute for selecting a suitable starter. Historical model spellings and codes remain in the original table; use the full code to retrieve the correct data.

Short-Circuit Ratings & Standards

ABB provides MS116 technical data under IEC/EN 60947-2, IEC/EN 60947-4-1 and IEC/EN 60947-1. Rated ultimate breaking capacity Icu and service breaking capacity Ics describe different test performance. Both depend on the exact product and voltage; the highest published family value must not be applied to every MS116.

Confirm the prospective short-circuit current and whether the documented arrangement requires upstream back-up protection. For a contactor starter, use ABB’s tested coordination table for the exact components, voltage and required coordination type. A North American application must use its own listing, installation conditions and short-circuit rating, rather than an IEC value alone.

Installation, Accessories & Requesting a Quote

Check panel space, mounting, conductor sizes, terminals, ambient conditions and any auxiliary contacts, shunt trip or undervoltage release. Control voltage is an accessory requirement where applicable; it is not one common supply specification for every MS116 body.

Send the complete MS116 model, ABB Order Code / Article Number, quantity and destination country. Include motor nameplate/current, supply voltage, duty, available short-circuit current, contactor details and required accessories. For an existing assembly, provide markings, connection details and photos.
