Protection duty: gG and aR

ABB’s Fuseline OFA documentation distinguishes gG general-purpose, full-range fuse links from aR partial-range fuse links for semiconductor protection. An aR reference must not be described as providing the same overload-protection coverage as a gG fuse. Check the protection requirements of the complete circuit.

• Confirm the application category and protected equipment: distribution cable or equipment protection and semiconductor protection require different characteristics.
• Match rated current and the published time-current characteristic to the load, starting or inrush current and protection coordination.
• Confirm AC or DC use, operating voltage and rated breaking capacity for the exact reference. A catalogue maximum is not a rating for every fuse in the list.
• Verify physical fuse size, blade or connection dimensions, holder or switch-fuse reference and permitted power loss. Matching current alone does not establish fit.
• For semiconductor protection, confirm the applicable let-through energy and equipment requirements using the relevant curves and data.
• Specify indication requirements and environmental or installation conditions. Check the applicable IEC 60269 documentation and regional requirements for the ordered version; no universal certification is implied.

Include fuse category, rated current, operating voltage, AC/DC circuit details, fuse size and holder or switch-fuse model. For existing equipment, add a clear fuse/nameplate photo and dimensions.
