Protection and control functions

Protection relays process specified current/voltage or sensor inputs to detect faults and command the associated switching equipment. Application scope differs by relay and configuration: ABB documents REF615 for feeder protection, RET615 for transformer protection and REM615 for motor protection, while REX615/REX640 support selectable multiapplication arrangements.

The existing 106 references include Relion/REX and earlier SPACOM or other designations. A family name or application label is not a complete hardware/software specification. Current REX features must not be assigned to historical entries without their own manuals.

Conditions needed for selection

• Define the protected feeder, transformer, motor or other plant, network voltage/frequency and earthing arrangement.
• Specify protection functions, fault duties, settings and coordination/selectivity requirements.
• Confirm CT/VT or sensor interfaces, ratios, rated input values, auxiliary supply and binary I/O requirements.
• Specify trip/close circuits, communications, time synchronization, protocol/edition and cybersecurity requirements.
• Confirm the complete order configuration, hardware/firmware revision, mounting dimensions, terminals and environmental conditions.

Version and documentation boundaries

IEC, ANSI and Chinese-market versions and application packages must be checked separately. IEC 61850 communication support does not by itself establish every protection function or certification. Check enabled functions and hardware against the exact product guide and configuration.

The retained download is ABB’s Relay Retrofit Program for SPACOM to REX615, document 4TLB000502; it is not a REF615 product guide or a general compatibility statement. Its scope must be reviewed for the specific equipment and engineering requirements. No direct replacement or interchangeability relationship is asserted here.

Reference table and quotation

All original models, series and application fields remain unchanged. Unverified status labels have been converted to an ordering check. The table has no complete Order Code column; obtain the full ordering configuration rather than assuming one code for a relay family.

Send the full model and available ABB order/configuration code, quantity and destination, nameplate/hardware/firmware details, protection application, inputs, supply, I/O and communications. For existing installations, include terminal diagrams and interface requirements. Product status and current availability should be confirmed before ordering.
