ABB MS165 manual motor starters combine manual motor switching, thermal overload and magnetic short-circuit protection. They are used in motor feeder circuits and coordinated starter assemblies where the selected device’s ratings meet the motor and installation requirements.

This page retains nine MS165 model-and-order-code records. ABB’s guide describes the standard MS165 range as 10–80 A across different products with a 55 mm width. This is a range description, not the adjustment range of each unit. See the Motor Protection & Manual Motor Starters category.

MS165 Motor Protection & Selection

Protection Functions & Product Range

  • Thermal overload and magnetic short-circuit protection for the documented MS165 motor starter range.
  • Manual ON/OFF operation, trip indication and a disconnection function.
  • Different current adjustment ranges; selection starts with the motor’s actual current and duty.
  • Accessory and contactor combinations require the matching ABB selection and coordination data.

Current Setting & Motor Duty

Use the motor nameplate current at the actual supply voltage and winding connection. Select an MS165 with a documented adjustment range covering that requirement, then set it according to the motor and installation instructions. Confirm starting time, restart frequency and load duty rather than selecting by kW alone.

The retained table covers MS165-16 through MS165-80 designations, including MS165-73. Check the complete Article Number against its data sheet. Do not transfer parameters from MS165-RTB, other regional versions or the magnetic-only MO165 range to a standard MS165 entry.

Short-Circuit Performance & Standards

Rated ultimate breaking capacity Icu and service breaking capacity Ics are different performance indicators. Check both at the operating voltage for the exact product, along with the prospective short-circuit current and any back-up protection required by the documented arrangement. A series maximum is not a universal installation rating.

Use the applicable IEC/EN 60947-2, 60947-4-1 and 60947-1 product data. North American approvals and short-circuit combination ratings have their own installation conditions. If combined with a contactor, verify the exact components, voltage and required coordination type in ABB’s tested tables.

Installation, Accessories & Requesting a Quote

Confirm panel space, mounting, conductor and terminal requirements, ambient conditions and any documented derating. Check auxiliary contacts, signalling contacts, releases and connecting links against the selected device. An accessory control-voltage requirement is separate from the main motor-circuit voltage.

Send the complete MS165 model and ABB Order Code / Article Number, quantity and destination country. Include motor nameplate/current, supply voltage, starting duty, prospective fault current, contactor details and required accessories. For an existing assembly, provide nameplate and wiring photos and connection details.
