ABB RVT power factor controllers measure electrical conditions and control the switching of capacitor-bank steps for automatic power factor correction. They are controllers, not capacitors or active harmonic filters. This page retains RVT6, RVT12 and RVT12-3P model and ABB article-number references, with selection information for capacitor-panel enquiries.

RVT Capacitor-Bank Control and Measurement

Key Features

In industrial and commercial low-voltage power factor correction panels, the controller’s settings and measured signals determine when capacitor steps are connected or disconnected. Correct CT wiring, step sizes and switching/discharge settings are part of the panel design; choosing a controller alone does not establish the suitability of the complete bank.

RVT6, RVT12 and RVT12-3P

ABB’s RVT instruction manual distinguishes the RVT6/RVT12 base models from RVT12-3P. The base models have one voltage and one current measurement input and six or twelve output relays. RVT12-3P has three voltage and three current measurement inputs, twelve output relays and individual-phase power factor control. Select the measurement arrangement for the actual network and capacitor-bank configuration.

The manual lists additional RVT12-3P functions such as energy measurement, real-time clock and Ethernet. Do not apply those functions to every RVT6 or RVT12. Check the full article number, software revision and applicable documentation before specifying communications or monitoring requirements.

Measurement and Control Conditions

Confirm the network voltage, frequency, phase arrangement and balanced or unbalanced load conditions. ABB specifies 1 A or 5 A current-transformer inputs in the referenced manual; provide the CT ratio, location, polarity and existing wiring. Voltage measurement and controller supply are separate specifications, and a voltage transformer may be necessary for the measurement arrangement.

Confirm the number of capacitor steps, kvar per step, target power factor, switching devices and permissible reconnection/discharge time. Controller output contacts switch control circuits: their contact ratings are not the capacitor-bank power rating. Check the contactor or other switching-device control requirements against the exact controller’s outputs.

Harmonics, Installation and Standards

RVT measurement and alarm functions can help monitor power-quality conditions. Harmonic monitoring does not make the controller an active harmonic filter. Capacitor-bank design in a network with harmonics requires appropriate assessment of the load, resonance risk and any detuned-reactor arrangement.

The referenced ABB manual identifies measurement category CAT III according to IEC 61010-1 and gives installation, wiring and EMC information. Confirm the applicable document revision, supply and output ratings, environmental conditions and regional requirements for the exact unit; do not treat historical manual statements as blanket current certification.

Model Lookup and Quotation Information

Use the retained model/article-number table below. For a quotation request, send the complete RVT model and article number, quantity, destination country, network/supply details, CT ratio and wiring, number and size of capacitor steps, switching method, communications requirements and panel layout. For an existing installation, include the controller nameplate, software information and connection photos.

Browse Power Quality and the separate RVC controller page. Controller and capacitor/switching equipment must be selected as a documented panel arrangement; these links do not establish a replacement or compatibility relationship.

ABB Technical Reference

The ABB RVT instruction manual, 2GCS222022A0050 Rev B (PDF) includes model comparisons, CT connections, settings and technical specifications. Check the revision applicable to the full article number. Unconfirmed historical ratings, product status or interchangeability require individual verification.
