ABB ACS180 Machinery Drives

ABB’s hardware manual describes ACS180 control of asynchronous induction motors and permanent-magnet synchronous motors. Check the motor data and control requirements during selection and commissioning. The appropriate drive current and overload duty matter as well as the motor power.

04S Standard and 04N Base Variants

ABB distinguishes the standard ACS180-04S and base ACS180-04N variants. The standard variant includes Safe torque off (STO); the base variant has no integrated STO and no internal EMC filter. EMC category within the standard variant also depends on the supply-voltage version. Do not assume every ACS180 has the same filter or safety functions.

They remain for identification, but their full type code and applicable technical document must be verified before specification; no historical ratings or equivalence are inferred.

Supply, Motor and Duty Selection

ABB’s catalogue separates single-phase 200–240 V, three-phase 200–240 V and three-phase 380–480 V supply versions. These are different product variants, not one universal input rating. Match the complete drive type to supply voltage, phases and network arrangement, and then check the applicable output-current and motor-rating table.

Confirm motor voltage, current, frequency, power, speed and motor type, along with starting torque, overload demand and operating cycle. Check temperature and altitude derating, cooling space and enclosure conditions in the applicable hardware manual. A maximum power rating or environmental limit must not be applied to every frame and duty.

Control, Braking and Installation

Define the speed-reference and start/stop signals, required analog/digital I/O and communication interface. ABB’s catalogue includes Modbus RTU, but simultaneous use and wiring of communication and control-panel interfaces must be checked in the relevant manual. Verify firmware and panel/options requirements for the actual unit.

Braking and DC-connection provisions depend on frame size; the catalogue identifies the brake chopper and DC connection for R2–R4. Check the duty, resistor selection and installation instructions rather than assuming every frame has the same hardware. Cable lengths, earthing, EMC conditions, upstream protection and permitted supply networks also need application-specific checks.

Standards and Safety Boundaries

Use the applicable EN/IEC 61800-5-1 electrical-safety and EN/IEC 61800-3 EMC information for the complete variant and installation. STO information in EN/IEC 61800-5-2 applies to the equipped 04S variant and its prescribed implementation. STO does not disconnect the supply; electrical isolation and the machine’s safety design require separate consideration.

Regional approvals and editions must be confirmed for the full product code. IEC/EN data does not establish the conditions of a UL installation, and a current manual must not be treated as proof of every historical unit’s certification.
