Programmable machine-safety control

Pluto monitors safety devices and executes configured safety logic for machine applications. ABB documents programming through Pluto Manager, with inputs and outputs that depend on the selected controller. A gateway is a communication component and must not be treated as a controller with identical safety I/O.

Standalone and networked versions

The ABB catalogue distinguishes standalone S20/S46 from versions with Pluto safety-bus functionality. The existing table includes Pluto S20 v2 and other controller references; do not assume every Pluto supports the same bus, I/O, analogue or speed-monitoring functions. DYNlink input arrangements and connected-device limits must follow the exact manual.

Design and selection conditions

• Define each safety function and the required PL/SIL through the machine risk assessment.
• List connected devices and signal types, including contacts, OSSD, DYNlink, analogue or encoder inputs where applicable.
• Confirm I/O quantity, safe outputs, output loads, control supply and feedback/reset requirements.
• Specify standalone or networked architecture, communications/gateway requirements, program version and validated response-time requirements.
• Check installation, wiring, diagnostics and environmental conditions using the exact controller documentation.

Component capability does not by itself establish the achieved safety performance of a complete machine. EN ISO 13849-1 or IEC 62061 assessment, application design and validation must cover the complete safety function.
