Light curtains and light grids

ABB Orion optical safety devices detect intrusion into a protected field and provide signals for the machine safety function. ABB distinguishes Orion1 light curtains for finger/hand detection from Orion2 and Orion3 light grids for access/body detection. Resolution, protective height, beam arrangement and operating range depend on the exact model.

Base and Extended functions

Base and Extended versions have different functions and connection arrangements. Muting, blanking, cascading or integrated control features must be confirmed for the applicable version; they are not universal Orion capabilities. Select transmitter/receiver or active/passive units and connection accessories as a documented arrangement.

Selection and machine integration

• Define the hazard, required detection capability, access geometry, protective height and distance.
• Determine safety distance using the applicable standard and total machine/system stopping and response time.
• Confirm sensing range, beam/resolution requirements, alignment, mounting and environmental conditions.
• Specify supply, safety outputs, controller interface, reset and external-device monitoring.
• Where required, define a validated muting/blanking arrangement with its sensors, timing and safeguards using the exact manual.

Device type and approvals must be checked in its technical data. The required and achieved PL/SIL concern the whole safety function; IEC/EN 61496 device requirements and machine risk-assessment/validation obligations cannot be replaced by a family-name claim.
