Safety monitoring and functional groups

Safety relays supervise defined machine-safety functions and provide controlled safe outputs. ABB’s Sentry documentation distinguishes BSR basic/expansion functions, SSR application-specific functions, TSR timing functions and USR configurable functions. Input device type, reset arrangement and time functions must be checked for the selected model.

The original references also include RT, JSBR, BT and E1T designations. They remain available for identification; current Sentry features, approvals and wiring must not be assigned to those references without their own manuals.

Selection conditions

• Define the safety function and required performance level through the machine risk assessment.
• Specify connected device and signal type: contacts, OSSD, two-hand control or other documented input arrangement.
• Confirm supply voltage/type, channel arrangement, reset, feedback monitoring and fault-detection requirements.
• Specify safe output quantity/type, load, any expansion and immediate/delayed switching requirements.
• Check exact connection diagram, response time, environmental conditions and installation space.

EN ISO 13849-1/IEC 62061 assessment and validation apply to the complete safety function. A maximum PL/SIL capability stated for a component is not a universal guarantee for the machine. Do not select a relay solely by contact count or enclosure appearance.
